The FiberPipe hardware–software system converts data from fiber‑optic sensors into measurable physical parameters and provides predictive monitoring of field pipelines located on structurally unstable soils in the Arctic, in real time, with high accuracy and autonomy. The system can be adapted to monitor other infrastructure assets and engineering structures: distillation columns, bridges, and wells.

Fiber‑optic monitoring system

As sensors we use FBG sensors—fiber Bragg gratings that change their reflection spectrum in response to applied mechanical stress.

Each sensor has a unique reflection spectrum in the IR range, which allows both series and parallel connection.
Mechanical stress on the grating leads to a shift of the reflection spectrum, which is registered and processed by the interrogator.

In locations of increased mechanical load on the pipeline—for example, at the support cross‑sections—a dedicated FBG sensor is attached. The sensor enables real‑time control of support displacement with an accuracy of up to 2 mm. The fiber‑optic cable with sensors is easily installed along the entire length of an existing pipeline without laying an additional trestle.

Sensor data analysis

The FiberPipe software converts, in real time, the interrogator’s data on changes in the sensors’ reflection spectra into measurable parameters: tension and compression, pressure, temperature, or fluid flow rate.

The FiberPipe hardware–software system is suitable for a wide range of domains:
— oil and gas: monitoring of support settlement of above‑ground pipelines on structurally unstable soils; process parameters of distillation—namely temperature, pressure, flow rate and level on the trays, temperature inside distillation columns, pressure in wells;
— aerospace and maritime: condition of critical components and assemblies, for example, a ship engine shaft or a spacecraft transmit antenna;
— infrastructure assets: condition of roads, bridges, and tunnels.

Products and solutions for business

Our company offers a condition‑monitoring service for assets, as well as the interrogator and software solutions as standalone products.

The service includes the full scope of work for installing the monitoring hardware–software system, maintenance and support of the interrogator, sensors, and software. The service can be customized for the end user’s tasks and requirements.

Interrogator

A sensor interrogator based on photonic integrated circuits that provides real‑time measurement of reflection spectra using machine‑learning algorithms.

Software

A convenient interface for monitoring assets and analyzing their parameters. It allows easy control of the interrogator, displaying sensor data for the monitored asset both in real time and for a selected period.

Team

The FiberPipe team has come a long way—from building the first interrogator mock‑up and winning the Energy Technohub St. Petersburg incubator to delivering a finished product with support from grants by the Innovation Assistance Fund and Skoltech. More: achievements, articles, patents.
